岡山県瀬戸内市にある小さな港町「牛窓」。過疎化が進み、暮らす人が少しづつ減り、商店の閉鎖も昨今、急激に進んでいます。築100年ほどの民家も空き家となり、建物の老朽化、取り壊しが進み空き地となり、牛窓の魅力が失われつつあります。日本の原風景である土壁の民家や蔵などがなくなり、牛窓の町の景色が変わろうとしています。ITやAIなどのデジタル化が進む中、すべてが近代化され、全国各地すべてが均一とされてきました。僕たちは現代社会を見据えつつ、最前であり、最古を大切にしていかなければなりません。牛窓の文化を再生し残していくこと。伝統を伝承していくことをしなければなりません。1984年には地域とアートを結ぶ「JAPAN牛窓国際芸術祭」が牛窓で開催されました。1992年まで続いたこの祭典は、美術館から解き放たれたアート作品を地方から発信できる芸術祭の先駆けとして今でも語り継がれています。私たちのプロジェクトの核にもなっている「牛窓クラフト散歩」は、この芸術祭のような賑わいを再生させたいと強く願った実行委員会の熱意により生まれました。人が集まれば必ず風景も変わっていきます。潮風薫るこの港町の美しい風景をこれからも大切に守っていきたいと願います。
When traveling, there is a stone monument in the middle of a footpath between fields, and there is a poem. By the poem without a record of poet, I feel the place where I stand is built by time that people to live here has spent. One day the great coincidence led me to the gallery called “Ochaya ato” in Okayama prefecture. There, what I thought we've lost long time ago still existed. I could see the wisdoms from past which has been handed down from generation to generation in every where of this small town “Ushimado”. The sea wind of the Seto Inland touches the skin of the people and sounds filling this town always teaches me something important. Nothing special but precious that you can find in the everyday life if you look for, something humble but brightness increase as time goes by.
